A major breakthrough in the development of a new generation of zero-power devices for nuclear reactors in China

The nuclear reactor zero-power device "Qi Xing II" jointly developed by the China Nuclear Research Institute of China Nuclear Power Corporation and the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences successfully achieved the first critical. This marks a major breakthrough in the research and development of nuclear power reactors in the new generation of zero-power devices in China, which is of great significance for solving the problem of “safe disposal of nuclear waste”.

It is understood that the "Qi Xing II" device innovatively uses the "double core" structure of water reactor and lead stack, which is a multi-functional reactor with different enriched solid uranium bars as nuclear fuel and water or lead as medium. The physical comprehensive experimental research platform has the characteristics of inherent safety, flexible variability of the core, visibility of operation control, and measurement accuracy.

Previously, the nuclear reactor zero-power device "Qi Xing I" was successfully developed by the China Institute of Atomic Energy in July 2005 with the support of the National 973 Program, and became the benchmark device for the IAEA to carry out relevant experimental research.
