New battery device of Ningxia University achieves desalination of high concentration brine

A few days ago, the research group of Professor Luo Min of Ningxia University constructed a high-performance low-energy consumption desalination battery device to achieve desalination and desalination of high concentration brine. Related papers were published online in the American Chemical Society "Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering".

The shortage of water resources and the pollution of the water environment are major problems that plague society's sustainable development, and seawater desalination technology provides an effective solution to this problem. At present, commonly used water treatment technologies such as reverse osmosis, flash evaporation and electrodialysis, etc., generally have high cost, high energy consumption and secondary pollution problems, so the development of low-cost, low energy consumption and high efficiency water treatment technology is imperative.

Desalination battery is a new type of desalination technology, through the input of electrical energy, redox reaction occurs on the electrode surface, thereby extracting sodium ions and chloride ions in the salt solution, to achieve the purpose of desalination and desalination. After that, the ions are released into concentrated brine through the discharge process, and part of the energy is recovered at the same time.

In recent years, the rapid development of two-dimensional layered nanotechnology has provided opportunities for the development of new desalination electrode materials. With this technology, the researchers built a new desalination battery device with doped sodium cobalt as the negative electrode and activated carbon as the positive electrode. Studies have shown that the rich oxygen vacancies improve the conductivity of the material, and calcium ions play a role in stabilizing the laminate structure between the layers, thus achieving high desalination and high cycle stability. This study has played a certain role in promoting the application of desalination batteries in high-concentration brine desalination and water resource utilization.
