RoboJelly team developed bigger and better CYRO machine jellyfish
Last year, a team of researchers from Virginia Tech's School of Engineering introduced RoboJelly, a robotic jellyfish. Development of this soft robot started in 2009 and was roughly the size of a human hand. While impressive, it was just the beginning. The same team has since created an improved version called CYRO, a much larger and more advanced jellyfish-like robot.
CYRO measures 5 feet (1.7 meters) in diameter and weighs 170 pounds (77 kilograms). It’s designed to float neutrally in water, mimicking the movement of real jellyfish. This new model is not only bigger but also more capable, with enhanced functionality for underwater exploration.
The internal structure of CYRO sits on a plastic crate, housing electronic components, including rechargeable NiMH batteries. Eight mechanical arms are connected to this framework, each powered by its own DC motor. When covered with a silicone skin, these arms move in a way that closely resembles the motion of a real jellyfish, allowing the robot to swim efficiently through the water.
Compared to RoboJelly, CYRO is more practical for real-world applications. Its larger size allows it to carry more sensors and processing units, making it ideal for tasks like environmental monitoring, ocean floor mapping, or long-term underwater surveillance. It can operate for weeks or even months, significantly extending its range and mission capabilities.
CYRO and RoboJelly are part of a broader research initiative funded by the U.S. Navy Undersea Operations Center and the U.S. Naval Research Office. Several universities, including Providence College, UCLA, the University of Rhode Island, the University of Texas at Dallas, and Stanford, are also involved in the project. The team is led by Professor Shashank Priya from Virginia Tech, who continues to push the boundaries of soft robotics and bio-inspired engineering.
