In May alone, China’s total trade volume hit $343.58 billion, marking a 14.1% increase compared to the same month last year. This set a new monthly record, surpassing the previous high of $334.11 billion recorded in November 2023. Both exports and imports reached all-time highs for the month—exports climbed to $181.14 billion, up 15.3%, and imports rose to $162.44 billion, an increase of 12.7%.

From January to May, China’s general trade imports and exports totaled $801.57 billion, up 8.8% year-on-year. Exports under general trade reached $371.83 billion, growing by 9.8%, while imports stood at $429.74 billion, up 8%. Meanwhile, processing trade imports and exports totaled $530.23 billion, representing a 4.4% increase. Exports under this category reached $340.44 billion, up 6.3%, and imports were $189.79 billion, rising by 1.3%.

Looking at key export categories, mechanical and electrical products remained a strong performer. From January to May, exports of such goods reached $447.88 billion, up 9.9% year-on-year. This outpaced the overall export growth rate by 1.2 percentage points, accounting for 57.8% of China’s total exports during the same period. Among them, exports of electrical and electronic products reached $179.46 billion, up 6.7%, while machinery and equipment exports totaled $148.5 billion, rising by 12.1%.

On the import side, mechanical and electrical products accounted for $297.4 billion in imports, nearly matching the level from the same period last year. Notably, car imports saw a significant rise, with 510,000 units imported—an increase of 31.5% compared to the previous year.
