Post-holiday invisible prices for home building materials
In recent months, the home furnishings market has seen a subtle but noticeable shift in pricing strategies. According to industry insiders, March is traditionally a time when manufacturers adjust their pricing, but this year, the changes are more strategic and less direct. Instead of outright price hikes, many companies are implementing what's being called "invisible price increases." For example, a sofa that looks nearly identical to last year’s model might now come with a significantly higher price tag, often due to minor design tweaks or rebranding efforts.
A recent survey by Huaxi Dushi Bao found that many retailers have already raised prices following the Spring Festival holiday, with some even increasing costs before the holiday season began. At Chengdu Bieyi Furniture City, staff reported a surge in customer inquiries about when stores would reopen after the break, indicating heightened consumer interest.
Cai Chengwei, marketing manager at Steve Rowland, confirmed that price increase notices from manufacturers have started to arrive. Meanwhile, Zhou Wei, general manager of Jianlang Home Furnishings, explained that while current product prices remain stable, future adjustments will depend on material cost fluctuations. Local branches may also adjust prices based on regional demand and market conditions.
One customer, Mr. Bowe, expressed frustration over rising costs. “I saw a coffee table last year for 1,500 yuan, but now it's priced at 1,850,†he said. “It seems like every store is offering promotions, but the prices keep going up.â€
Many businesses are using new product launches as a way to justify price increases. In one sofa showroom, sales representatives told reporters that certain "new models" are available only for immediate purchase, not for custom orders, and come with a premium price—often thousands of yuan more than previous versions. Despite similar designs, the materials used appear unchanged, leading customers to question the real value behind the price jump.
Industry analysts believe that home furnishings are not considered daily necessities, so consumers tend to be less sensitive to price changes. This allows manufacturers to implement small, incremental increases without triggering strong backlash. While plate and solid wood furniture have seen modest price rises, high-end solid wood items, especially those made from rare woods, have experienced more significant increases. European and American-style furniture, which already carries a premium, is expected to remain relatively stable, as these products have built-in price flexibility.
This spring, promotional activities in the home furnishings sector have started earlier than usual, with many companies launching sales campaigns as early as February. Wu Zhiwei, manager of Guangdong Baojule Home’s Chengdu branch, noted that rising rents and production costs have put pressure on dealers. He also mentioned that consumers today have more options, and competition among sellers has intensified.
Experts suggest that now might be a good time to shop for home furnishings, particularly if you're interested in Guangdong or coastal brand products. Dealers are eager to secure orders for major exhibitions in Guangdong, and many are offering discounts to clear inventory. Additionally, some manufacturers are trying to set a strong start for the year, making this an ideal time to find good deals. However, after March, many brands may raise prices again, waiting until the May Day holiday peak season to implement further adjustments.
