Raw and cooked feed is not mixed

In livestock and poultry feeding, some ingredients should be fed raw, while others need to be cooked. It's important not to mix the two approaches, as improper preparation can affect the health and growth of animals. Raw feeding is suitable for certain feeds such as silage, which is made through microbial anaerobic fermentation. Silage is rich in nutrients, fresh, juicy, and contains a high amount of lactic acid bacteria that aid digestion and help prevent diseases. It’s best to feed it without cooking. Similarly, amaranth and beet leaves are packed with vitamins and minerals, and they are more nutritious when fed raw. Cooking them can destroy many essential nutrients and even lead to the formation of harmful substances like nitrites. On the other hand, some feeds must be cooked before being given to animals. For example, cottonseed cake and rapeseed cake contain toxic compounds—free gossypol and glucosinolates, respectively—that can be harmful if not properly detoxified. These should be treated at high temperatures before feeding. Cassava and potatoes also contain toxic compounds like cyanogenic glycosides and solanine, which can be broken down by cooking, making them safe for consumption. Soybeans, peas, and broad beans contain anti-trypsin and other harmful substances that can cause poisoning if fed raw. Aquatic plants like water hyacinth, duckweed, and floating lotus often carry parasites, so they should always be cooked before being used as feed. Sorghum and pumpkin contain tannins and urease, which can interfere with nutrient absorption and lead to the production of harmful ammonia in the digestive system of animals. By properly cooking these feeds, the harmful substances can be neutralized, turning them into beneficial sources of nutrition for livestock and poultry. Understanding which feeds should be raw and which should be cooked is essential for maintaining the health and productivity of animals. Always ensure that feed is prepared correctly based on its composition and potential risks.
