Overall PCBN blade characteristics and their milling applications

Abstract : This paper introduces the development of PCBN tool structure and highlights the characteristics of SECOMAX's new overall blade grade CBN300. Finally, the actual CBN300 blade of SECO is introduced in the flexible line of Shanghai General Motors Co., Ltd. Powertrain Factory. The successful application of high-speed milling gray cast iron cylinder plane-line speed up to 2000m/min shows the excellent quality of PCBN milling cutter in improving machining efficiency.

The continuous advancement of cutting tool materials plays an important role in the development of machining technology. The increased performance and increased tool life associated with the use of new tool materials have made it possible to ensure interchangeability of mass-produced parts with strict dimensional accuracy and surface roughness requirements.

PCBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) is a mineral that is second only to diamond in nature (microhardness is 8000-9000 HV). Blades made of PCBN material are the hardest blades for processing ferrous metals. Its good thermosetting properties (heat resistance up to 1400 ~ 1500 ° C), oxidation resistance (no chemical reaction with iron-based materials at 1200 ~ 1300 ° C) and fracture toughness give the PCBN series of blades extremely extreme in actual cutting. Excellent features. At present, 60% PCBN tools are used in the automotive industry, including for automotive engine casings, brake discs, drive shafts, cylinder bores, and engine inlet and outlet valve seats. In addition, 20% of PCBN tools are used for the processing of heavy equipment such as rolls. PCBN tools are also popular in many processes that require increased processing efficiency. With the rapid development of modern manufacturing, especially the large number of flexible production lines (FMS) in the automotive industry provide a good opportunity for the application of new PCBN materials.

1 SECOMAX Series CBN Blade Technical Specifications

From Table 1, we can see the development of PCBN: from the original brazed blade with only one edge to the integral blade (up to 8 cutting edges). SECO's CBN100 integral blade is a modified version of CBN10. The CBN100 is a fine-grained integral PCBN blade with less PCBN content (50%). Its low thermal conductivity allows the cutting heat to concentrate in the cutting area, which greatly improves hardening. The effect of steel finishing. CBN100 can be used for the finishing of some hard materials such as hardened steel, hardened alloy and sintered steel. The PCBN content (45%) in CBN150 is also low. It is a kind of welding PCBN material on the cemented carbide substrate. The blade has excellent impact toughness and can be used for the machining of higher hardness workpieces with harsh cutting conditions or interrupted cutting.
