Waterproof and thermal insulation coating reduces oil loss in storage tanks, pipelines and tank cars

From the refinery to the end user, oil must pass through multiple stages, and evaporation losses during loading and unloading can be quite significant. According to data from the United States on oil and gas recovery, each loading and unloading process results in a volatile loss of approximately 0.18%, with a total loss rate of 0.72% after four such operations. To address this, ZS-221 solar heat reflection and anti-corrosion coating technology can be applied to storage tanks, pipelines, and tank trucks, helping to shield them from sunlight, reduce oil temperature, and ultimately minimize evaporation losses during these processes.

Water cooling is commonly used during summer for vaulted gasoline tanks. Spraying cooler water helps lower the temperature inside the tank. However, when using ZS-221 solar heat reflection and anti-corrosion coating technology, the surface temperature of the tank top may be higher than the surrounding area, meaning its cooling effect isn’t as immediate as watering. Despite this, the technology offers several advantages:

First, it provides continuous protection against evaporation loss throughout the year. “Little breathing” and “Big Breathing” losses occur all year round. For example, a 5000m³ vaulted gasoline tank at Shanghai Petroleum Corporation experiences an average “small breath” loss of 197kg when the oil temperature is just 10°C. This shows that even in spring and autumn, losses are considerable. Unlike water spray methods, which require intermittent operation, ZS-221 works continuously, offering more consistent performance.

Second, it’s more convenient to use. Although water spraying is simple, it requires careful timing and cannot be done continuously, which increases operational complexity. Additionally, water spraying can accelerate tank corrosion and lead to rusting. In contrast, ZS-221 not only reflects heat but also has anti-corrosion properties, helping maintain the appearance of the tank area and reducing long-term maintenance efforts.

Third, it conserves valuable water and energy resources while promoting environmental protection and safety. The ZS-221 coating offers excellent resistance to weather, moisture, yellowing, powdering, heat, humidity, salt spray, and mold. With a service life of over eight years, it significantly reduces maintenance costs and ensures long-term efficiency.

Fourth, it delivers substantial cost savings. A 5000m³ tank can save about 15 tons of gasoline per month using ZS-221. For frequently operated vaulted or internal floating roof tanks, the investment can be recovered within six months. This makes it a highly efficient and economically viable solution.

The application of ZS-221 solar heat-reflective anti-corrosion coating technology demonstrates its effectiveness in lowering the surface temperature of storage tanks and the temperature of the oil vapor inside. In silver paint, it achieves excellent thermal insulation. During summer, floating roof tanks can cool down by over 20°C, while vaulted tanks can drop by 10–20°C, effectively replacing traditional water-cooling methods. It is estimated that this technology can reduce “small breathing” losses by over 80% and significantly cut “big breathing” losses.
