How to Build a Wire Mesh Fence
Building a wire mesh fence is an easy and cost-effective way to secure your property. It's durable, affordable, and ideal for keeping animals in or out. Whether you're marking boundaries, preventing unwanted access, or creating a safe enclosure, wire mesh fencing is a great choice. Learning how to build it yourself can save you money and give you control over the design and installation.
Tools and Materials You’ll Need:
- Tape measure
- Spray paint
- String
- Wooden or metal fence posts
- Post-hole digger
- Concrete mix
- Fence stretching tool
- Fencing nails or clips
- Wire mesh fencing (preferably woven, not welded)
Step 1: Plan the Location
Before starting, choose where you want your fence to go. Measure the area carefully so you know exactly how much material you need. If there are trees, bushes, or other obstacles in the way, remove them first to make the job easier.
Step 2: Mark the Corner Posts
Once you’ve determined the fence line, mark where the corner posts will be placed. Dig holes for these posts and insert temporary stakes to help guide the placement of the actual posts later.
Step 3: Use a String to Keep It Straight
To ensure your fence is straight, run a string between the corner posts. This will act as a guide while you install the rest of the fence posts, helping you maintain even spacing and alignment.
Step 4: Mark the Remaining Posts
Using spray paint, mark the positions for all the remaining fence posts. Make sure they are evenly spaced and follow the string line for a neat, professional look.
Step 5: Plan the Gate(s)
Decide where you want your gate or gates to be. Mark those spots clearly so you can install the proper support posts and leave space for the gate hardware later.
Step 6: Dig the Post Holes
Dig holes for each post. The depth should be at least one-third of the post’s height to ensure stability. Corner and gate posts need deeper holes than the others. A post-hole digger makes this task faster and more efficient.
Step 7: Add Concrete to the Holes
Pour dry concrete into the bottom of each hole until it’s about halfway full. This provides a solid base for the posts.
Step 8: Set the Posts in Place
Insert the posts into the holes and make sure they’re straight and level. Then fill the remaining space with wet concrete and let it cure completely. This ensures the posts are firmly anchored.
Step 9: Attach the Wire Mesh
Once the posts are set, begin attaching the wire mesh. Start from a corner post and stretch the mesh tightly as you move along the line. Use a fence stretching tool to keep the wire taut. Secure the mesh with clips or nails at the top, bottom, and middle of each post. Woven wire is preferred because it offers better flexibility and strength compared to welded mesh. Taking the time to stretch and secure the mesh properly will prevent sagging and increase the lifespan of your fence.
