New biofuel formula mixed with chicken droppings and weeds

New biofuel formula mixed with chicken droppings and weeds

The industrial farming of chickens may provide us with almost endless supply of eggs and chicken nuggets, but it also produces a large amount of feces. According to foreign media reports, recently Landmark University researchers in Nigeria have effectively used chicken manure. They have developed a new process that mixes chicken manure with exotic weeds to produce biofuel feedstock. A wide variety of waste is considered a potential source of biofuels, including sawdust, restaurant waste oil, and even municipal wastewater. Converting waste into biofuels can be a two-pronged approach to managing the environment.

The Landmark University research team used an anaerobic process to perform anaerobic fermentation of chicken manure. Unfortunately, poultry manure does not produce large quantities of biogas, but the researchers found that the rate of gas production has increased dramatically since the addition of Mexican sunflower. Mexican sunflower is an exotic plant species that spreads throughout Africa.

In the new process developed by the research team, they pretreated chicken manure before joining Mexican sunflower, and then all the mixtures were anaerobicly treated by microorganisms. Every 8 kg (17.6 lbs) of material can exceed 3 kg (6.6 lbs) of biogas, and the remaining residue can be used as fertilizer.

The study was published in the magazine Energy and Fuels.
