New Concept Collapsible Modular Fan Blade Designed for Giant Wind

A joint scientific research team in the United States recently announced a foldable, modular fan impeller design. The wind turbine unit using this design can be used for self-protection under severe weather conditions. It can be applied to large-scale generator fan wheels at sea. . The research team, led by Prof. Eric Loth, Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, University of Virginia, includes researchers from the University of Illinois, the University of Colorado, the Colorado School of Mines, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and the Sandia National Laboratory.

The team’s design is called the Segmented Ultralight Morphing Rotor (SUMR). The blades are mounted downwind and can be folded like palm leaves in dangerous weather conditions. Apply this. The design of the blade enables the realization of a maximum blade length while achieving light weight, and the segmented design allows the blade to be installed in the field. When the folded blade reaches its maximum length, a peak power of 50 MW can be emitted under strong wind blowing on the sea surface.
