American cherry wood

The scientific name of this tree is Prunus serotina, Ehrh., belonging to the Rosaceae family. In trade, it's commonly referred to as black cherry in the U.S. and Canada. In the United States, it’s also known as cabinet cherry wood due to its popularity in cabinetry.

Geographically, it has a scattered distribution within the annual deciduous forests of the United States and Canada. This tree tends to grow in small clusters rather than large, dense populations.

In terms of appearance, the heartwood ranges from deep red to light reddish-brown tones. It has a straight grain with narrow streaks that sometimes feature brown patches and tiny tree capsules, giving it a unique texture. The wood is characterized by its fine structure. On average, it has a density of 580 kg/m³, with a specific gravity of 0.58.

Mechanically speaking, the wood exhibits excellent bending properties. Although it has relatively low hardness, it offers medium strength and decent impact resistance, making it versatile for various applications.

When it comes to processing, this wood is quite manageable. It can be easily worked by hand or machine tools without causing excessive wear on the equipment. Its nail-holding capacity, adhesive properties, and ability to take polish are all commendable.

Due to these qualities, black cherry wood finds extensive use across industries. It’s often employed for creating parquet floors, pipes, musical instruments, furniture, and cabinets. Additionally, it’s highly valued for crafting high-end wooden items, marine interiors, and even car parts or engravings. Selected logs can also be sliced into veneers for use in furniture, cabinets, siding, and polished doors.
