Using Decentralized Power Supply to Protect Beijing Subway without Power Outage
Polaris Smart Grid Online News: At the end of December, four new subway lines will officially open in Beijing, bringing the total number of subway lines to 16 and increasing the total operating mileage to over 440 kilometers. The smooth operation of the subway system is closely tied to a stable power supply. Ensuring the safety and reliability of the power grid has become a top priority for city planners. To explore how Beijing is addressing this challenge, the reporter recently visited the State Grid Corporation of Beijing and the Songjiazhuang Substation, as part of an on-site investigation into the development of rail transit power infrastructure.
According to the Beijing Electric Power Company, the city’s subway system utilizes an advanced decentralized power supply model. This approach ensures that even if one power source fails completely, the entire network remains operational. The system is designed with redundancy and resilience in mind, making it one of the most reliable in the world.
Decentralized power supply involves setting up 110-kilovolt substations near key subway routes. These substations distribute power through dual 10-kV circuits to main distribution rooms, which then supply power to stations on both sides of the line. This configuration allows for mutual support between different power points along a single track. If one section experiences a fault, the adjacent section can automatically take over, ensuring continuous service without interruption.
During the visit to the Songjiazhuang Substation, the reporter observed the quiet and efficient operation of the 110-kV transformer equipment. Each device was clearly labeled with its corresponding power supply area, and two independent power systems were in place to ensure maximum reliability. Zhang Kunming, Deputy Chief Engineer at Fengtai Power Supply Company, explained that the substation plays a crucial role in supporting the city’s rail transit network.
He noted that rail transit currently accounts for approximately 70% of the substation’s total load. This includes power supply for the Yizhuang Line Parking Lot, Songjiazhuang Gonglian Station, Line 10 stations, and ongoing construction projects for Line 10 parking facilities. The substation uses state-of-the-art technology and equipment, reflecting the high standards set by the Beijing Power Grid to support the city's growing transportation needs.
With the expansion of the subway network, the importance of a robust and intelligent power supply system continues to grow. As Beijing moves toward a more sustainable and efficient urban transportation model, the integration of advanced power solutions remains a critical component of its success.
