Wind power will continue to grow

Wind power will continue to grow Wind energy is set for a major expansion, according to the latest report from the Global Wind Energy Council and Greenpeace. The total global wind power capacity is expected to grow more than fourfold by 2030, rising from 240 GW at the end of 2011 to an estimated 1,100 GW by 2020. This growth could potentially meet up to one-fifth of the world’s energy demand. Svensky, a senior energy expert at Greenpeace, highlighted that long-term policy stability is key to sustaining the wind power industry's success. Consistent government support sends a strong signal to investors and outlines a clear vision for the sector’s future development. The report also notes that wind energy could supply between 11.7% and 12.6% of global electricity demand, significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 1.7 billion tons annually. In less optimistic scenarios, the total installed capacity might only reach 587–759 GW by 2030, still accounting for over 8% of the world’s electricity supply. However, the study stresses that widespread and systematic government support remains essential to ensure the continued growth of this renewable energy source. As other clean energy sectors like solar power and green technology continue to expand, wind energy is expected to play an even greater role in the global energy mix. By 2020, the wind power industry is projected to create around 2.1 billion jobs worldwide. After an initial period of rapid growth, prices are expected to stabilize over time. In the most pessimistic scenario, the wind power market may stagnate or even shrink slightly after 2015, with capacity falling back to 2011 levels by 2020. However, with strong global government backing, the market could see significant growth between 2015 and 2020, potentially pushing total installed capacity to between 1,600 GW and 2,500 GW by 2030. This suggests a bright future for wind energy as a cornerstone of the global transition to sustainable power.
