Application of laser tracker in automobile body detection and analysis
**1. 6D Measurement Technology with Laser Tracker**
As the demand for precision measurement and quality control in industrial settings continues to grow, various on-site measuring tools such as laser trackers, articulated arm systems, and large-scale scanners have emerged. Compared to traditional coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), these devices offer lower precision but provide greater flexibility and portability. They can be easily moved close to the workpiece within a workshop environment without requiring special conditions like controlled temperature, humidity, or gas supply. This makes them ideal for real-time measurements in production areas.
Laser trackers are particularly popular in automotive OEMs and their suppliers due to their ability to measure large components with high accuracy and convenience. However, traditional laser tracking relies mainly on 3D measurement using a reflective target, providing only X, Y, Z coordinates. While this method is effective for aerospace and automotive applications, it becomes less efficient when dealing with complex workpieces that require more detailed data.
To address these challenges, Leica introduced the T-Series 6D measurement solution. By integrating a T-Cam camera into the tracker, the system can now capture not only the X, Y, Z coordinates of the target but also its rotational orientation (I, J, K), offering a full 6-degree-of-freedom measurement. This enhancement significantly improves accuracy and efficiency during complex measurements.
**1.1 Walking CMM – T-Probe**
The T-Probe adds a ruby-tipped probe to the laser tracker, allowing contact-based measurement similar to a CMM. With a range of up to 50 meters, it combines the portability of a laser tracker with high-precision measurement capabilities. It’s ideal for inspecting body parts, sub-assemblies, and fit checks during the manufacturing process.
The T-Probe operates wirelessly, powered by an internal battery, and allows users to perform measurements, deletions, and continuous scanning with a simple button press. This transforms the laser tracker into a mobile, cable-free 3D measuring system.
**1.2 Non-Contact Measurement – T-Scan Probe**
In addition to the T-Probe, the T-Series includes the T-Scan system for non-contact surface scanning. The T-Scan probe captures point clouds, triangle meshes, and surface renderings, making it perfect for shape comparison, size control, reverse engineering, and gap analysis.
It can scan up to 20,000 points per second, enabling fast and accurate contour comparisons, flush & gap evaluations, and waistline measurements. This makes it an essential tool for surface inspection and quality assurance in complex manufacturing environments.
