Additional breakdowns from the same report show that metal forming machine tool orders in March totaled $470 million, rising 33.1% from the previous month and 3.7% year-on-year, with 2,191 units ordered. Meanwhile, cutting machine tool orders reached $39.83 million, up 5.9% month-over-month but down 1.9% year-on-year, with 142 units recorded.
Looking at the first quarter of 2013, total U.S. metalworking machine tool orders amounted to $1.28 billion, representing a 5.0% decline compared to the same period in 2012. The total number of orders was 6,535 units. Within this, cutting machine tool orders dropped to $1.16 billion, a 6.7% decrease year-on-year, with 6,127 units ordered. On the other hand, forming machine tool orders rose by 15.2% year-on-year to $120 million, with 408 units placed.
Regionally, demand for machine tools remained strong in the northeastern central and northern states, as well as in the northwestern central and western regions, which include nine and ten federal states respectively. However, in the northeast, south central, and southeast regions, orders saw a year-on-year decline. These regional differences highlight the uneven recovery across different parts of the U.S. manufacturing landscape.

Benefiting from the recovery of manufacturing industry, US machine tool orders increased by the ring
Abstract According to the latest data from the American Association for Manufacturing Technology, in March 2013, the U.S. metalworking machine tool orders reached $510 million, showing a 30.4% increase compared to the previous month and a 3.2% year-over-year growth. The total number of orders was 2,333 units, up by 202 units from the prior month but down by 157 units compared to the same period last year. Douglas Woods, president of the American Association for Manufacturing Technology, noted that both the overall order volume and the year-over-year growth reflect a positive trend driven by improving auto sales, a stronger housing market, and increased consumer spending, all of which are gradually boosting the U.S. manufacturing sector.
