Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the timber anti-corrosion industry access standards
On September 27, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) issued the "Entry Requirements for the Wood Anti-Corrosion Industry" in China. This new regulation aims to standardize and improve the environmental and industrial management of the timber preservation sector. All new or expanded wood anti-corrosion projects must align with national industrial policies, local development plans, land use strategies, and forestry guidelines.
The policy emphasizes that no new wood preservative manufacturers will be allowed to open, except those producing high-efficiency, low-toxicity, and environmentally friendly wood preservatives. This move is intended to reduce pollution and promote sustainable development in the industry.
According to the requirements, timber preservative projects are strictly prohibited within 2 kilometers of urban planning boundaries, within 1 kilometer of schools, residential areas, and other highly polluting facilities, as well as near scenic spots, nature reserves, and protected drinking water sources. Existing projects in these restricted zones that fail to meet the entry standards must either be upgraded or relocated to comply with the regulations.
In addition, the "Conditions" set minimum production capacities: new or renovated wood preservative projects must have a capacity of at least 2,000 tons per year, while new anti-corrosion wood processing projects must produce no less than 10,000 cubic meters annually. The production workshops must be equipped with leak-proof and corrosion-resistant systems. Any liquid wood preservatives discharged from pressurized tanks should be recycled or properly disposed of, and the waste liquid must meet either general sewage discharge standards or site-specific environmental regulations.
Furthermore, all new wood preservative projects are required to be located within chemical parks or industrial clusters. The MIIT also encourages existing manufacturers to restructure and merge, focusing on enhancing their competitive advantages. This initiative is expected to consolidate the industry, reduce environmental impact, and improve overall efficiency.
This regulation reflects the government’s growing emphasis on environmental protection and sustainable industrial growth, signaling a shift toward stricter oversight and more responsible practices in the wood preservation sector.
