Benefiting from the recovery of manufacturing industry, US machine tool orders increased by the ring

Abstract According to the latest data from the American Association for Manufacturing Technology, in March 2013, U.S. metalworking machine tool orders reached $510 million, marking a 30.4% increase from the previous month and a 3.2% rise compared to the same period in the prior year. The total number of orders was 2,333 units, up by 202 units from February, but down by 157 units when compared to March 2012. Douglas Woods, president of the American Association for Manufacturing Technology, noted that these figures indicate a positive trend driven by improving auto sales and housing market conditions, which have led to increased consumer spending and, in turn, supported the growth of the U.S. manufacturing sector.

Additional data reveals that in March 2013, metal forming machine tool orders totaled $470 million, an increase of 33.1% from the previous month and 3.7% year-over-year, with 2,191 units ordered. Meanwhile, forming machine tools saw $39.83 million in orders, a 5.9% rise from February but a 1.9% decline compared to March 2012, with 142 units ordered.

Looking at the first quarter of 2013, total U.S. metalworking machine tool orders amounted to $1.28 billion, representing a 5.0% decrease compared to the same period in 2012. The order volume was 6,535 units. Specifically, metal cutting machine tool orders reached $1.16 billion, down 6.7% year-on-year, with 6,127 units. In contrast, orders for machine tools rose by 15.2% year-on-year, reaching 408 units.

Regionally, demand for machine tools remained strong in the five federal states in the northeastern central and northern U.S., as well as in the nine federal states in the northwestern central and ten western states. However, in the northeast, south central, and southeast regions, orders experienced a year-on-year decline. These regional variations highlight the uneven recovery across different parts of the country, with some areas showing stronger signs of industrial growth than others. Overall, the data suggests a gradual but positive shift in the U.S. manufacturing landscape, supported by improved economic indicators and rising consumer confidence.
