Characteristics and construction technology of thick steel structure fireproof coating

When a thick steel structure fireproof coating is applied to the surface of a steel component, it forms an insulating and fire-resistant layer by utilizing its non-combustible properties and low thermal conductivity during a fire. This prevents direct exposure of the structural member to the fire, significantly enhancing the fire resistance of the steel structure. The coating is non-corrosive, does not react with any anti-rust primer, has no strong odor, and is lightweight, reducing the structural load. It offers a large coverage area per unit, and in the event of a fire, it does not crack or fall off. These features make it ideal for fire protection of load-bearing steel structures in various industrial, civil, and construction projects, including new builds, expansions, and renovations.

Construction Techniques for Thick Steel Structure Fireproof Coating

1. Before applying the fireproof coating, the steel component’s surface must be properly cleaned and rust-removed, ensuring that the anti-rust primer meets design specifications and national standards. All dust, oil, and debris on the steel surface should be thoroughly removed to ensure proper adhesion.

2. The fireproof coating should be applied before interior finishes are completed, and care must be taken to avoid damage from subsequent work. During the process, areas that do not require fire protection, such as walls, doors, windows, and machinery, should be covered and protected.

3. Prior to spraying, apply a steel structure interface agent. Once it is dry, the coating can be applied using either spraying or brushing. Mix the powder and emulsion in a ratio of 1:1 to create a smooth, thick fluid without lumps. Adjust the consistency based on the application method—ensuring it is easy to work with, doesn’t run, and adheres well. For very large steel components, adding a steel mesh helps prevent the coating from sagging or peeling off.

4. When using a spray gun, use a high-pressure type with an air pressure of 0.6–0.8 MPa and a nozzle diameter between 6–10 mm. Keep the spray gun perpendicular to the surface being coated, ideally at a distance of 40–60 cm for even distribution.

5. The first coat should not be too thick. Apply additional coats gradually, ensuring each layer is evenly distributed without dripping, until the desired thickness is achieved.

6. The brush application method for fireproof coating is similar to how cement is applied. Ensure even coverage and proper thickness throughout the process.
