Many families face the same dilemma: should they install a built-in cabinet or a custom-made one in the wall hole left by the developer? The truth is, both options are possible, but some manufacturers consider cabinets with a roof as non-standard and charge more for them. However, for companies with advanced CNC technology, producing non-standard wardrobe sizes is no different from making standard ones. Experts recommend measuring the exact dimensions of the space after the renovation is complete to ensure a perfect fit. So, how exactly do you measure your wardrobe size? 1. What is the standard size of the wardrobe
There are various standards among manufacturers when it comes to overall wardrobes, but there are general guidelines that most follow. However, these can vary depending on the brand.
(1) The depth of an overall wardrobe is usually between 55-60 cm. If the space allows, going with 60 cm is better. Manufacturers often charge the same for both sizes, but the experience of hanging clothes differs significantly.
(2) The width of flat doors typically ranges from 45 to 60 cm, while sliding doors are between 60 to 80 cm. Flat doors may not be suitable for very wide or heavy panels due to limited hinge strength.
(3) For hanging coats, a height of 140 cm is sufficient. We’ve found that even long nightgowns can be hung at this height. For longer items like down jackets or suits, 130–120 cm works well. It’s best to design the wardrobe so that the space is fully utilized without being wasted.
(4) A section for hanging tops should be around 85–95 cm tall. This ensures maximum use of vertical space without being too cramped.
(5) The height for pants is usually 80–90 cm. Some people prefer a trouser rack, but I found that using a clothes rail with hangers is more practical. This gives more flexibility and saves space.
(6) Quilt storage spaces are more flexible, with a height of about 30 cm being enough. These are usually placed at the top of the wardrobe for seasonal items.
(7) Shoe storage boxes can be designed based on the height of two shoe boxes, typically 25–30 cm.
(8) The height for backpack storage depends on the overall design. Try to make it consistent with other sections to keep the look balanced.
(9) When installing a clothes rail, make sure it is positioned 4–6 cm below the top board. Too close and it becomes hard to hang clothes; too far and it wastes space. Also, choose high-quality rails with strong hardware for durability.
(10) The ideal height for the clothes rail is 20 cm above the hostess's height. If the male host is shorter, adjust accordingly for comfort.
2. How to determine the size of the wardrobe
Suppose you have a traditional wardrobe with a total height of 2440mm. Here’s a typical layout: the lower cabinet is 1830mm high, with drawers 200mm each. Each door is about 450mm wide, and the depth is often split into 600mm. For smaller units, start with 100mm plywood and cut into two parts. The cabinet depth is 560mm, and the door is 580mm, with a minimum width of 530mm to avoid sleeve damage. If space is tight, consider a pull-out pole to reduce depth to 350mm. For men’s shirts, a 960mm height is ideal. A full-length mirror inside the door measures 1070x350mm and should be aligned with the head height for optimal visibility. Movable shelves are usually spaced every 250mm for easy access to clothes and accessories.
There's a lot to know about wardrobes, and it's impossible to cover everything in one go.
