In the building materials market, it's common to see specialty stores displaying various certificates—both Chinese and foreign language—that claim to prove product quality. Retailers often provide multiple versions of environmental inspection reports, trying to convince customers that their products are eco-friendly. But when faced with such an overwhelming number of certifications and reports, many consumers wonder: who can we really believe? Watch Out for Low-Cost Large Core Boards Large core boards are frequently used in home renovations, but formaldehyde emissions from these boards remain a major concern. These boards are typically classified into E1 and E2 grades based on the levels of harmful substances they emit. Formaldehyde is the primary pollutant, and its negative effects on human health have led the government to set strict regulations. Only E1-grade large core boards are allowed for use in residential decoration. Even if an E2-grade board is considered qualified, its formaldehyde content may be more than three times higher than that of E1-grade boards, making it unsuitable for homes. When a reporter purchased a large core board as a consumer and mentioned it was for home use, most sellers claimed their products were safe and environmentally friendly. Some even suggested using other materials for furniture, without mentioning any potential health risks. The reason low-quality large core boards still exist in the market is due to their significantly lower price compared to certified products. According to a manager at Dalian Penghong Wood Co., Ltd. Beijing Branch, the production process of large core boards is actually quite complex. It requires sufficient time for natural drying and strict control during kiln drying. After the government imposed stricter limits on harmful materials, the adhesives used had to be upgraded, increasing costs by about 10%. As a result, it’s nearly impossible for manufacturers to produce E1-grade large core boards at prices as low as 60 or 70 yuan. Even the 90-yuan E1-grade boards are sold at a small profit. Therefore, if you come across extremely cheap large core boards, it's wise to be cautious before making a purchase. Fake Test Reports Are Common According to Lu Bin, deputy director of the National Quality Supervision and Inspection Center for Wood-based Panels, there are two main types of testing: sampling inspection and trust-based inspection. The results of entrusted inspections usually state that they are only responsible for the sample tested. Industry insiders suggest that most of the test reports seen in the market are based on sampled products, which means companies often select their best items for testing. In some cases, they even buy products from competitors to submit for inspection. This leads to discrepancies between the tested samples and the actual products sold. Additionally, some unscrupulous merchants fabricate test reports to mislead buyers. To protect consumer health, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China issued a mandatory standard for formaldehyde emissions from wood-based decorative materials at the end of 2001, which took effect on January 1, 2002. Last year, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision conducted random tests in eight markets, including Beijing Oriental Home. The results showed that 38% of the products failed, highlighting serious issues in the market. In response, six international brands like "Ruijia," "Montblanc," "Bai Li," "Dehejia," "Kang Cai," and "Pule" decided to refuse inspections unless they were tested by the National Quality Supervision and Inspection Center for Wood-based Panels. Their first batch of tests confirmed that all products met the required standards, showing that transparency and reliability are possible in the industry.
