Rattan furniture is among the oldest forms of furniture in the world, with its origins dating back thousands of years. First introduced to Europe in the 17th century by European merchants, it quickly became a popular choice for both comfort and style. Ancient Egyptian artifacts include wicker baskets and bed cores from around 2000 BC, while Roman murals often depict officials seated on intricately woven wicker chairs. In regions like ancient India and the Philippines, rattan was widely used to craft not only furniture but also decorative items.

China boasts a rich tradition of rattan utilization that stretches back millennia. Before the Han Dynasty, low-seated furniture was common, with people using woven rattan seats known as "diàn." These were considered luxurious items at the time and are mentioned in historical texts such as "Yang Yu Wai Chuan," "Chicken Lin Zhi," and "Things of the Yuan Ji." Over time, as productivity improved during the Han Dynasty, rattan furniture diversified, leading to the creation of chairs, beds, cabinets, and even utensils. The Ming and Qing dynasties saw an explosion in the variety of rattan pieces, some of which remain preserved in museums today.

In western regions like Tengchong, the use of rattan dates back to the Tang Dynasty, with a documented history spanning over 1,500 years. Southern Anhui province also embraced rattan furniture starting in the early Qing Dynasty, maintaining a tradition that has lasted for centuries. Yunnan province, particularly Tengchong, became renowned for its superior quality rattan, earning the nickname "Tengchong Sanjia" (Three Treasures of Tengchong). During World War II, Yunnan rattan gained international acclaim, being exported to Southeast Asian countries and even Germany. Today, these pieces are celebrated as symbols of craftsmanship and heritage, with some even gracing the halls of national institutions.
