Researchers at the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom have found that fat people react more sensitive to food tastes, and that they can obtain more pleasure from tasting, which may lead to excessive eating.

The researchers divided 40 undergraduate students into obese and non-obese groups. All had normal olfactory sensations, no smoking, no weight loss or dieting plans. During the experiment, the researchers let the listener smell the smell of artificial dark chocolate, evaluate the concentration of odor and bring pleasure. The odor was diluted to different concentrations to test the lowest concentration the listener could smell. At the same time, the four main tastes of the subject were tested: acid, salty, bitter, and sweet. The solution of the four tastes was sprayed on the tongue of the subject and allowed to recognize the concentration of each taste. Afterwards, the researchers analyzed the relationship between smell, taste and body weight based on measured data. The results showed that the obese participants were more sensitive to the olfactory response to chocolate odor, and subjectively obtained more pleasantly. In addition, the obese group experienced a greater concentration of salty and sour taste, but there was no significant difference in bitterness or sweetness.

Lorenzo Stafford, a senior lecturer at the Center for Comparative and Evolutionary Psychology at Portsmouth University, said that the association of the sense of smell with the brain's "starvation center" stimulates the "reward function" of the brain and has a great influence on eating behavior. In addition, the smell of high-calorie foods may also stimulate eating cravings, resulting in eating too much and eventually causing excessive weight.
