Through a purchase of just 20 yuan on Taobao, a solar-powered charging device capable of recharging mobile phones, MP4 players, LED lights, and other small electronic devices was created. This innovative project was introduced by a sales technician from Ningbo Sanle Electric Co., Ltd. at the Yuyao Forum. The initiative, titled “Green,†encouraged users to take part in DIY projects that promote energy efficiency and sustainability. Cai Yong, a 30-year-old electronics major, came up with the idea after noticing an issue with his elderly family members’ phone. They often forgot to charge it, leading to sudden shutdowns and making it hard for him to reach them. Frustrated by this problem, he decided to take action. Using some knowledge from online tutorials and items purchased on Taobao, Cai Yong built a simple yet effective solar charger for under 20 yuan. He bought a solar panel for 10 yuan, a USB cable for 3 yuan, a power adapter for 2 yuan, and a small battery for 5 yuan. After testing, the device worked perfectly, and the family’s phone no longer faced unexpected power cuts. He shared his creation on the Yuyao Forum, and the post quickly gained attention. Within days, it had been viewed over 3,500 times, received 70 replies, and was even recommended by the forum’s administrators. Many users asked about the materials and how to build their own version. Cai Yong provided detailed information: the solar panel cost 10 yuan, the USB cable 3 yuan, the power adapter 2 yuan, and the rest of the components totaled around 5 yuan. He explained that the solar panel, originally used in Volkswagen cars as a backup power source, was sold cheaply on Taobao due to surplus stock. He emphasized that many such affordable options exist online if you know where to look. "Many people think solar panels are expensive and high-tech," Cai said. "But they’re actually very cheap. I found mine on Taobao for just 10 yuan. With a voltage converter, it can output 5 volts, matching a standard USB port. That means you can easily charge your phone or MP4 using a regular data cable." Although the charging time is longer—about five hours in direct sunlight—it’s still useful for emergencies or when trying to save energy. Cai also shared a step-by-step guide online, showing others how to make their own solar charger. The process is straightforward, making it accessible to anyone interested in green technology. In addition to his current project, Cai is now working on a more powerful solar system designed specifically for charging larger devices like electric vehicles. If successful, he plans to share the details with the community, continuing his mission to promote sustainable living through DIY innovation.
