When working with NSK bearings, proper installation and maintenance are crucial for ensuring their longevity and performance. Whether you're dealing with a large number of bearings or just a single unit, following the right procedures is essential.
First, when removing a large number of NSK bearings, it's important to start by using hot oil at a temperature of 90–100°C to melt the encapsulating oil. Avoid using any sharp objects to dig out the old oil; instead, rinse the bearings for a few minutes. Then, use kerosene to clean the oil, followed by gasoline. After cleaning, make sure to dry the bearings on a clean cloth or let them air dry.
Before installing an NSK bearing, check the design drawings to ensure the correct dimensions and tolerances are met. Inspect the shaft and housing bore for dimensional accuracy, shape precision, and surface finish. Any imperfections can affect the installation and lead to premature wear.
When opening the NSK bearing package, immerse the bearing in gasoline or similar solvents and gently rotate it by hand. This helps remove any residual lubricant or dirt from the raceway and the outer surface. Make sure the bearing is properly cleaned before installation.
The installation area should also be thoroughly cleaned using a solution of gasoline, kerosene, toluene, or xylene. Wipe the surfaces with a clean cloth and apply a thin layer of lubricant to facilitate smoother installation.
It’s important to note that sealed NSK bearings should not be cleaned using this method. The seal should remain intact as it protects the internal components from contamination.
Any bumps, burrs, rust, or foreign particles (such as dust, sand, or debris) on the shaft or housing bore can cause improper installation and even damage the bearing. These particles may get trapped inside the bearing during rotation, causing abrasive wear. Before installation, carefully inspect the surfaces and remove any imperfections using appropriate tools like oil stones, fine sandpaper, or cloths.
There are several methods for installing NSK bearings:
1. **Using a Copper Rod**: This is a common technique for small to medium-sized bearings. If the inner ring is tightly fitted, place the copper rod against the inner ring end and gently tap it with a hammer. This distributes the force evenly and prevents damage. For larger bearings, tap around the inner ring evenly to avoid uneven pressure.
2. **Using a Sleeve**: Similar to the copper rod method, a sleeve made of soft metal (like copper or low-carbon steel) can be used to press the bearing onto the shaft or into the housing. This ensures even distribution of force and reduces the risk of misalignment.
3. **Press Installation**: For high-precision installations, a hydraulic press can be used. Apply pressure directly to the end face of the bearing that has interference fit. Applying pressure to other areas can damage the bearing.
4. **Heating Method**: For large bearings with tight fits, heating the bearing using a fuel tank or electric heater can help expand it slightly. This makes installation easier. However, keep the temperature below 100°C—ideally between 80–90°C. Excessive heat can reduce the hardness of the bearing and shorten its lifespan.
Proper installation techniques not only improve the performance of NSK bearings but also extend their service life. Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines and use the right tools and methods for each situation.
