12 lawyers jointly request the government to disclose genetically modified foods

Genetically modified (GM) foods have long been a topic of public concern, especially as debates over their safety continue to spark controversy. Recently, the ongoing debate between Cui Yongyuan and Fang Zhouzi has once again brought attention to this issue. But what exactly are genetically modified foods? On June 12, twelve lawyers from Guangdong, Shandong, Anhui, and Hubei sent a joint letter to the National Food and Drug Administration and the Ministry of Agriculture, calling for transparency regarding GM food information. Their request aims to ensure the public's right to know and make informed choices about what they eat. The government must approach the issue of genetically modified foods with caution. In June this year, the Ministry of Agriculture approved the import of three types of genetically modified soybeans, which sparked widespread public interest and concern. Lin Min, a member of the National Committee on Genetically Modified Organisms, recently stated that "GM foods are as safe as non-GM foods, and 4/5 of the world’s population consumes genetically modified products." This claim reignited public debate and raised questions about the accuracy of such statements. Liu Shuqing, a lawyer from Shandong and one of the initiators of the information disclosure request, expressed concerns about the long-term safety of GM foods. He pointed out that it may take decades or even centuries to fully confirm their safety for humans. Given the differences between experimental animals and humans, as well as the limitations of current testing methods, it is difficult to apply existing toxicological data directly to human health. "A single mistake in decision-making could lead to irreversible damage," he warned. The claim that 4/5 of the global population consumes GM products remains questionable. Liu Shuqing emphasized that the public's understanding of GM foods is still limited, and such a statement appears careless and irresponsible. "I doubt the accuracy of this figure. I hope the Ministry of Agriculture can provide the sources and data behind this claim," he said. Similarly, lawyer Shi Baozhong from Anhui stressed that GM foods are closely related to public health and that the government should be more transparent. He argued that increased information sharing would not only satisfy the public’s right to know but also help consumers make informed decisions between traditional and genetically modified foods. Respecting the consumer’s right to know is essential. Lawyer Tie Liu from Guangdong raised several critical questions in the joint letter: What are genetically modified foods? What potential risks do they pose? What are the consequences of consuming them? And how might they affect agricultural ecosystems? These questions highlight the lack of clear and accessible information available to the public. Tie Liu emphasized that as consumers, people have the right to understand the details of GM foods. "Only with sufficient information can we make informed judgments and choices," he said. "If we fail to respect and protect consumers’ right to know, the safety of GM foods will remain in question. Safety cannot be judged solely by expert opinions." Several lawyers also requested specific information in their application, including the types of GM foods currently available in China, the materials and procedures used for safety evaluations, the list of companies producing and selling GM foods, and the penalties for those who fail to label GM products properly. As the debate continues, the call for transparency and public awareness grows stronger. With so many unanswered questions, it is crucial that the government takes a responsible and open approach to ensuring the safety and integrity of the food supply.
