12 lawyers jointly request the government to disclose genetically modified foods
The safety of genetically modified (GM) foods has long been a topic of public concern, and recent debates between well-known figures like Cui Yongyuan and Fang Zhouzi have brought the issue back into the spotlight. But what exactly are genetically modified foods? On June 12, twelve lawyers from Guangdong, Shandong, Anhui, and Hubei sent joint letters to the National Food and Drug Administration and the Ministry of Agriculture, calling for transparency regarding GM food information. Their goal is to ensure the public's right to know and make informed choices about their food.
The government must approach this issue with caution. On June 13, the Ministry of Agriculture approved the import of three genetically modified soybean varieties, sparking renewed public debate. Lin Min, a member of the National Committee on Genetically Modified Organisms, recently claimed that GM foods are as safe as non-GM ones, stating that four-fifths of the global population consumes GM products. This statement has reignited discussions and raised concerns among many citizens.
Liu Shuqing, a Shandong lawyer involved in the information disclosure request, argues that the safety of GM foods remains uncertain. He points out that the gap between animal testing and human biology makes it difficult to fully assess long-term risks. "It may take decades or even hundreds of years to confirm the safety of GM foods for humans," he said. "Given the limitations of current experiments and the differences between species, making hasty decisions could lead to irreversible consequences for the nation."
Liu also expressed skepticism about the claim that 4/5 of the world’s population consumes GM products. “I doubt the accuracy of that figure,†he said. “I hope the Ministry of Agriculture will release the sources and data behind such statements.†He emphasized that the public deserves clear and reliable information before making decisions about their food.
Similarly, lawyer Shi Baozhong from Anhui believes that GM foods directly impact public health and that the government should be more transparent. By providing detailed information, consumers can better understand the risks and benefits, allowing them to make informed choices between traditional and genetically modified options.
Respecting the consumer’s right to know is essential. Lawyer Liu Tieliu from Guangdong raised several key questions in the letter, including the potential risks of GM foods, their long-term effects on human health, and their impact on agricultural ecosystems. He criticized officials for rarely addressing these issues openly, despite ongoing debates about GM food safety.
Liu emphasized that every consumer has the right to access accurate information before making decisions. “If we don’t respect and protect people’s right to know, the safety of GM foods becomes questionable,†he said. “Safety should not be judged solely by expert opinions.â€
Several lawyers also requested specific details in their application, such as the types of GM foods currently available in China, the materials used in safety evaluations, the list of companies producing and selling GM products, and penalties for those who fail to label GM ingredients properly.
As the debate continues, the need for transparency and public education on GM foods grows ever more urgent. Only through open dialogue and clear information can society make responsible and informed choices about its food.
