The world looks to China for cashmere, and China looks to Qinghe. This is the powerful voice that Qinghe has sent to the global cashmere industry. Behind this strong statement lies a journey marked by challenges—market chaos, policy discrimination, lack of brand recognition, and limited market influence once held back Qinghe’s progress. But with perseverance, Qinghe Cashmere has taken on transformation and upgrading, steadily moving toward the high-end segment of the industry. After over 30 years of development, Qinghe has risen from the low end to the top, capturing the industry's forefront with unstoppable momentum. This year’s Qinghe International Cashmere Fair emphasized the theme of “leading, integrating, and breaking through,†which aligns closely with Qinghe’s long-term strategy of pursuing high-end growth.
**Leading – The Technological Transformation**
Cashmere raw materials are the foundation of the industry, and Qinghe has built its reputation on high-quality raw materials. Its processing capacity accounts for more than 50% of the national total. To ensure quality, Qinghe has invested heavily in combing technology, achieving a standard where cashmere with a coarseness ratio below 1 in 10,000 and a impurity rate under 2 in 10,000 is produced. These standards far exceed national requirements. Qinghe’s products not only supply major domestic brands but also enjoy international recognition, serving renowned French brands like Lauro Piana and Bill Fibre. In 2012, Qinghe’s cashmere exports reached $630 million, making up 29.6% of China’s total cashmere exports. Among these, cashmere garments accounted for 42%, cashmere sweaters for 33%, and cashmere scarves for 16% in the global market. Qinghe was later designated as a “National Demonstration Base for Cashmere Foreign Trade Transformation and Upgrading.â€
To further strengthen quality control, Qinghe partnered with the State Administration of Quality Supervision to establish the National Cashmere Product Quality Inspection Center, a key statutory inspection body. It issues impartial reports recognized globally. Additionally, Qinghe launched the “Qinghe Cashmere Price Index†in collaboration with the China Animal Product Distribution Association, entering the price index era. The Qinghe (International) Trading Center also began operations, with Qinghe Cashmere soon listed on the Bohai Commodity Exchange, breaking traditional trading methods.
Qinghe has upgraded its spinning equipment, with most machines being Italy’s sixth-generation BIGAGLI models. The resulting cashmere yarn is soft, clear, and anti-pilling, surpassing similar products. With an annual production of 7,000 tons, Qinghe is now the largest cashmere spinning base in China, offering a wide range of yarn types—from 28-count wool to 200-count worsted yarns, and from pure cashmere to 80/20 anti-pilling blends. The city also produces specialty fibers like velvet and rabbit hair. These innovations have made Qinghe the country’s leading center for wool production and distribution.
**Integration – Expanding Sales Channels**
In the Taobao product search, many of the top results are Qinghe-based brands such as Kumeijiao, Pamir, and Jingweisi. These online brands have created sales miracles. Qinghe enterprises have seized the e-commerce boom, opening over 5,000 online stores, employing more than 50,000 people, and achieving annual sales of 1 billion yuan. This makes Qinghe the largest network sales base for cashmere products in China. Cashmere yarn products alone account for 74% of Taobao’s cashmere sales, and villages like Donggaozhuang have become influential “Taobao Villages.â€
While online sales have flourished, Qinghe’s physical market has also grown rapidly. In 2008, it launched China’s first professional cashmere market, ending the long-standing issue of “no market for Qinghe cashmere.†Today, the market generates over 1 billion yuan annually, with more than 400 companies operating across 20 provinces. The second phase of the Qinghe Cashmere Market, an e-commerce startup park covering 220,000 square meters, is under planning. Once completed, it will enhance both e-commerce integration and market functions.
With the concept of “channel is king,†Qinghe has embraced both online and offline strategies, ensuring resilience against global economic crises. In 2012, the county added over 800 computerized flat knitting machines, boosting cashmere product output to over 9 million pieces. This rapid growth in automated knitting has expanded Qinghe’s sales channels, allowing it to become a hub for global cashmere fashion trends, solidifying its position as the “Qinghe Cashmere World.â€
**Breakthrough – Brand Building and Innovation**
Once lacking in brand presence, Qinghe’s cashmere industry is now evolving rapidly. Brands like Zhaojun, Pipi Dog, Hongye, Yishang, Huajia, Lundyland, Béron, Cool Meijiao, and Pamir are emerging as strong local names. Qinghe is investing in branding, working with institutions like Tsinghua University’s Fine Arts College to create the “Qinghe Prajna Cashmere Design Studio,†blending rich cultural elements into design.
